- Where can I buy Worms?
Worms can be purchased from any decent software
retailer, car-boot sale or second hand shop. Failing that
get it from eBay who've got it for only a couple of quid. Team17 no longer stock this title on their website.
Worms.
Worms United can also be purchased from Team17.
This includes both the original Worms and Worms
Reinforcements in one tidy package for under a tenner.
Worms
United (Limited stock).
Worms Reinforcements is no longer in production
but you may be able to find a copy floating about somewhere
or other. There's usually loads for under
a fiver.
Search
eBay for Worms Reinforcements
You will need Worms United or both Worms and
Worms Reinforcements for any of the levels downloaded
from this site to work.
- Is there a Worms demo I can play?
Yes. You can download it from the Team17
FTP site.
- What is the difference between Worms, Worms Reinforcements
and Worms United?
The original Worms did not support custom landscapes
or custom sample sets. Worms Reinforcements added these
features, as well as a single player challenge
game. IPX Network and modem support was also added in the
Reinforcements package, although you needed the original
game to use these new features.
As Worms became more popular, people didn't want to have
to buy both packages to get the best from the game. Worms
United was born. A package that gave you the original
game, plus the upgrade. It also included extra levels and
sounds from the Team17
FTP site.
- I've got Worms on floppies, can I add Reinforcements?
Yes you can. Do not run the Install program on the Reinforcements
CD, instead copy all the files and folders (except one) into
your original Worms directory maintaining the directory
structures. DO NOT copy the FMV folder from the CD. You will
no longer need to look up codes when running Worms
and you will also get the full motion video. You will need
the CD in the CD-Rom drive to run Worms.
- Worms and Windows
XP
The official word from Team 17 is
that "This game WILL NOT run under Windows
2000/XP" (Their
emphasis), so there you go. Some people however have got
it to work.
Method 1:
Open the worms directory and go into the folder named
BIN. Right click
and go into the properties of
the three files then
set them all to Windows
95 comparability
mode. Now go back to the main WORMS directory and double click
the file WORMS.BAT.
This has only been been
known to have various degrees of success.
Method 2:
Remove any old installation of the game.
Install DOSBox (download)
Copy the entire Worms United cd to a folder on your hard drive (I suggest c:\wormscd)
Run DOSBox and type the following (assuming d: is your cdrom and you have used the directory wormscd above):
mount c c:\wormscd
set wormscfg = c:\worms\worms.cfg
set wormscd = c:\wormscd
mount d d:\ -t cdrom -usecd 1 -ioctl
c:
cd worms
Press CTRL-F12 repeatedly until the cpu cycles are sufficient (I suggest in excess of 10,000)
Type 'worms' to play.
Thanks to Bensan from our forum for these tips.
Landscapes
- How do I add custom levels to Worms?
To use custom levels in Worms, you will need either
Worms Reinforcements or Worms
United. If you have one of these, simply place the
PCX, INF, BK1 and/or BK2 files into the WORMS/DATA/CUSTOM/GFX
directory. This folder contains all the custom level files.
- How do I play on a custom landscape?
On the level selection screen, press SPACE, and type in the name of the level to play on. The name is the same as the images files. e.g. TEAM17.PCX becomes TEAM17.
You can list all the custom graphics levels present on the disk by going to the OPTIONS, LOAD/SAVE OPTIONS and selecting LIST CUSTOM FILES.
- Where can I get custom landscapes?
You can get thousands of custom landscapes from the internet.
There are loads on this site, check out our landscapes
page. The Team17
FTP site contains hundreds of uploads from all over the
world, that you can download for free, and there are also
web
sites all over the place that have custom levels. You
can even make your own...
- How do I make a custom landscape?
Firstly, read custom.txt.
This explains most of what you need to know. Also, read gfxcon.txt.
This is the documentation that comes with Worms United,
for creation of levels. You will need the GFXCON.EXE program.
It is on the Worms CD-Rom or you can download
it from here.
- Why do I get a black box round my level?
If you level loads, but has a big, solid black box around it and all the worms are sat at the top behind the KO bar, then load the new PCX file into a paint package, and swap the colours 0 and 128 around (They are two shades of purple), so that the playing area is colour 128. Your level should work fine now.
Sounds
- How do I add custom sample sets to Worms?
You will also need either Worms Reinforcements or
Worms
United to add custom sound banks to Worms.
Place the SFX file into the WORMS/DATA/CUSTOM/SFX directory.
This folder contains all the custom sound files.
- How do I use a custom sample set in Worms?
To use a custom sample set, go into the TEAM ENTRY screen and click on the SAMPLE selection. It will cycle through all available sample banks until you find the one you want. You can hear all of the samples used, by going to the WORM OPTIONS/AUDIO and select the SAMPLE SET. Once your sample set has been chosen, click on TEST EFFECTS.
You can list all the custom sound files present on the disk by going to WORM OPTIONS, LOAD/SAVE OPTIONS and selecting LIST CUSTOM FILES.

- How do I make a custom sample set?
Firstly, read sampling.txt.
This explains most of what you need to know. Also, read samplist.txt.
This is the list of all the samples used in the game. You
will need the BANKEDIT.EXE program to construct the SFX files
for Worms. It is on the Worms CD-Rom or you
can download
it from here.
PLEASE NOTE! All SFX files must be below 760 kb. You will not be able to use your file if it is larger than this.
- Why are my samples too fast/slow?
As explained in sampling.txt,
for true sounding samples, they must be sampled at 15000hz.
A good audio manipulation program is GoldWave,
which will let you sample/resample at 15000hz.
- Why can't I edit all of the sounds?
The original BANKEDIT program did not contain all of the samples. Because of this a revised menu system was created. BANKEDIT.MNU. Simply overwrite the existing version on your system with this file (you may want to make a backup first as this file is not endorsed by Team17).
That hasn't helped!
